Grief, Trauma and EMDR Support under one roof

Grief counselling provides a safe and supportive space to process loss and the emotions that come with it.  Trauma counselling can help you process distressing experiences, manage emotional overwhelm, and regain a stronger sense of safety and control. We also offer EMDR support where appropriate.

Welcome.

Does this sound like what you’re carrying?

  • “It’s been a long time, and I still can’t get through the day.”
  • “I feel numb, or I feel everything at once.”
  • “I keep replaying what happened.”
  • “I can’t sleep, concentrate or relax.”
  • “Everyone expects me to be over it.”

You aren’t doing it wrong

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not doing grief or trauma wrong. There’s no timetable for healing, but counselling can help you move forward.

Grief and trauma counselling

When grief and trauma get tangled together.

Grief is the natural response to loss.
Trauma is the response to something overwhelming or frightening.

Most grief isn’t trauma, and we don’t treat ordinary grief as a problem. But a sudden, violent or witnessed loss, or a loss that reopens an earlier wound, can bring both at once. When that happens, working on only one can leave you stuck: the sadness stays heavy, and the fear and flashbacks don’t ease. Working with both together can help.

Grief and trauma counselling can help

A holistic approach

How we work with you.

Safety and pacing come first. We start by helping you feel steady, and we don’t push you to talk about anything before you’re ready. From there, depending on what you need, our work may include:

grief counselling

Helping you cope with the emotional, physical and cognitive effects of loss.

trauma-focused therapy

Helping you recover from traumatic experiences such as abuse, violence or disaster.

EMDR Therapy

Helping you process distressing memories through guided eye movements.

  • You may feel guilt
  • You may feel exhaustion
  • You may feel a loneliness that’s hard to explain

When someone you love is dying.

Grief doesn’t wait for a death. Many people start grieving when someone receives a life-limiting diagnosis. This unique type of grief is called Anticipatory Grief, and it is an extremely challenging grief to sit with.

What is EMDR Therapy.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) helps your brain process distressing memories, so they lose their intensity. Learn more at the EMDR Association of Australia.

Common questions about grief and trauma counselling

There’s no set time, and it isn’t a straight line. Grief changes shape rather than disappearing. We help you carry it in a way that lets you live.

Most grief reactions are normal, even the ones that feel strange or frightening. If it’s affecting your sleep, work or relationships, or doesn’t ease, counselling can help.

Grief is the response to loss. Trauma is the response to something overwhelming or frightening. They can overlap, especially after a sudden or violent loss. We can help you work out what you’re dealing with.

Not everyone does. We’ll talk with you about what’s likely to help, and EMDR is only one option

Yes. Grief and trauma don’t expire. Many people come long after the event, when something brings it back.

Yes. Grief can pull partners apart, because you often grieve in different ways. We can work with you individually or as a couple

At The Beach Haven we support adults and children 16 years and older.
