What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps your brain process distressing memories, so they lose their intensity. You stay in control and fully aware throughout. It isn’t hypnosis.

EMDR is recognised international as an effective treatment for trauma by organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO). It has helped millions of people worldwide overcome the impacts of trauma.

Common questions about trauma and EMDR therapy

EMDR does not require detailed verbal recounting of trauma; the focus is on activating the memory and allowing the brain to process it.

The length of treatment varies from person to person depending on what they are working on and how many memories they would like to process using EMDR. Elanie will work with you to establish your treatment goals and provide a guide on the expected treatment plan.

Yes, EMDR is a heavily researched, safe, and widely endorsed therapy. Because it does not require you to describe the traumatic event in detail, many clients find it less overwhelming than traditional talk therapies. However, processing memories can occasionally bring up vivid emotions or dreams between sessions, which is why we always build a solid foundation of coping tools before we begin the active eye-movement work.

Yes, EMDR is highly effective and recognized globally by organizations like the World Health Organization. Unlike therapies that simply help you “manage” symptoms, EMDR works by helping your brain reprocess the raw, stuck emotional data of a trauma. This shifts the memory so that while you still remember what happened, it no longer triggers the intense, painful physical and emotional distress in your body.

No, you will not forget what happened. EMDR is not hypnosis and it does not erase memories. Instead, it takes the “sting” out of the memory. You will still remember the facts of the event, but you will no longer feel the overwhelming panic, fear, or shame attached to it when it comes to mind.

No, you do not need a GP referral to book an EMDR session at The Beach Haven. You can self-refer and book directly with us at any time. However, if you are looking to claim a rebate through private health insurance, it is always best to check directly with your specific provider first to see what your policy covers for counselling.
